Descendants of Jean Pierre Bondurant
Generation No. 1
1. JEAN PIERRE1
BONDURANT was born Abt. 1636 in Lyon, France, and died in Virginia USA. He married GABRIELLE DE BARJON October 28, 1676 in Barre des Cevennes, Florec,
France. She was born in France.
Notes for JEAN PIERRE BONDURANT:
Donald C
Bondurant, P.E. spent his later years
in Heber Springs, Arkansas reseraching the connection of the Bondurant family
to Jean Pierre Bondurant. It had long
been thought that Jean Pierre was the son of Dr. Joseph and Elizabeth Ann
(Chastain) Bondurant of Lyon, France c.
1650. Dr. P.M. Agee, also a decendant
of the Huguenots and related to the Bondurant's, wrote "The History Of The
Agee Family" about 1930 had made a connection to Dr. Joseph Bondurant, but
did not give his source of information and his notes were lost.
After Donald
Bondurant's death Mary Dennis of Nashville was called in to help preserve his
notes. With the help of many people
copies were made and placed in libraries of the Universities in Murray,
Kentucky; Martin, Tennessee; and the
Tennessee State Library .

"THE BONDURANT FAMILY NEWSLETTER"
March 1988; V.II no. 1)
". . . .
.when the census takers in the early days made their lists they spelled names
as they sounded to them; many people in those days could not spell their own
names. Education was available for only
a select few and many (people) had only a rudimentary education or none at all.
". . . . .
the original immigrant was Jean Pierre Bondurand (as it was spelled on the
ships passenger list.) The name was
Anglicized to John Peter Bondurant. . .
. . . the spelling of 'Bundrant' was most commonly found in North Carolina and
parts of Tennessee, as was 'Bundren.'
"Jean Peirre
was born in Lyon, France, son of Dr. Joseph and Elizabeth Ann (Chastain)
Bondurant about 1680. They were
Huguenots, and many of the Huguenots were forced to flee France to escape
persecution and even massacre by the Catholic authorities. Nothing further is known of the family of
Dr. Joseph Bondurant except that Jean Pierre left France, went possibly to
Germany or Holland, thence to England.
The English provided aid to the refugees, arranged passage for them to
America, and gave them land in this country.
There were three ships. John
Pierre arrived at the mouth of the James River near Richmond, Virginia on the
"Ye Peter And Anthony" on September 20, 1700. Most of these refugees were settled at
"Manakin Town" a few miles upriver from Richmond; however, it is probaable that Jean Pierre
went elsewhere for a while as there seems to be no record of him at Manakin
Town until about 1704.
"Jean was a
Doctor of Physic as attested by some bills which have been found. He had three sons; John, Peter, and Joseph,
and two daughters, Elizabeth Ann who married James Faure (Ford) of Henrico
County, Virginia, and Francoise (Frances Jane) who married Pierre Salle, son of
Abraham Salle and Olive Perault.
"He died in
1734 / 5.
"John married
Sarah Rachel (Taylor) Mosley. It is not
known how many children they had but they included John Peter, Richard, Darby,
and (probably) Joel.
"Nothing
further seems to be known of Peter except that he married Amy * * * * as she signed a release of dower right on a land deed.
"Richard went
to North Carolina (Rockingham County.)
I have no record of his family there except the census data, but it is
problable that his children included Francis, Richard, Jr., Joel, and Drury. Joel and Drury were in North Carolina at the
time Richard was as both Joel and Richard, Jr. served in the army during the
war. Joel went on to Virginia where he
served a term in the army for another (in those days you could hire someone to
take your place.) Drury went from North
Carolina to Virginia thence to Ohio.
"Joseph was a
doctor. He married Agnes Radford,
daughter of John Radford and Elizabeth Maxey.
He lived and died in Virginia.
"Only a damn
fool would say unequivocally that there was never another Bondurant immigrant,
but so far we've never found any trace of one.
Every Bondurant, BonDurant, Bondrant, Bundrant, Bundrick, Bundren, etc. whom we have been able to
trace has gone back to John Pierre.
"As to
Catholics - - - in older days the matter was entirely different. The French Huguenots, from whence came all
our ancestors who settled in Manakintown on the James River, were a Protestant
people. The doninant religion, however,
was Catholic; in those days if you did not profess allegiance to the Catholic Dhurch
you were subject to torture, massacre, loss of your property, and other
delicate persuasions. Actually,
hundreds of Huguenots were massacred because of their religion. Those who could fled the country. Those who were caught were killed outright
or burned at the stake as heretics.
They held their religioous services secretly in caves, or wherever they
felt safe. Those who escaped eventually
traveled to all corners of the world, but the group which eventually came to
the James River near Richmond, Virginia had gone through Germany or Holland
principally and had finally arrived in England. They were generally destitute,
but the English people gave them help and even subscribed the funds to pay
their passage to this country. When
they landed they were given land by the direction of the King, and given food
and other help to sustain them for the first couple of years until they could
make it on their own.
"Here they
had unlimited choice of religion but their first Church was Episcopalian, more
or less patterned after the Church of England.
Many whom I know now do belong to that church, but many others are now
Baptist: many types of Baptist ranging
from Hardshell to Elementary to just plain Ignorant, and so on to the standard
Southern and Northern Baptist.
". . . .
.even today no Catholic can be accepted as a true Huguenot descendant; a Catholic can not be admitted to the
Huguenot Society."
(Excerpted from writings of Donald C. Bondurant, P.E.)
Excerpts From the
Society of the History of French Protestants:
"Pierre
Bondurant at the very beginning of the
18th century lived in the hamlet of La Roche, parish of St. Andre de Lancize
(Lozere), but also at Genolhac. He had
at least one son, Jean. A letter was
found dated from Geneva the 2nd or 9th of December, 1712 written by Marie de
Roux de Meinadier to her cousin, the wife of Peirre Bondurant. Remarkably written as well for the
penmanship as for the style on excellent paper, very legible and gives precious
information. This Marie de Roux de Meinadier
had gone out of France 'for causes of religion without any doubt.' She speaks of children of her cousin and
principally of the youngest established in Lyon and with whom she seems to have
correspondence. She speaks of her
sister, her brother, and the son of the latter, several nieces who are with her
in Geneva.
"We therefore
have a first evidence that members of the Bondurant family from the Hautes
Cevennes left France after the revocation of the Edit of Nantes. Moreover, there was in Lyon a Bondurant but
that was in 1712 when this letter was written.
This country of
mountains was very isolated at the end of the 17th century and barely
accessible for lack of roads, was the theatre of the terrible War of the
Camisards which began circa 1702. But
as early as the revocation of the Edit of Nantes in 1685 the Protestants were
persecuted relentlessly. Many of the
Cevenols (people of the Cevennes) left their country before 1700. First they went to Switzerland, from there they continued to Germany Holland, and
England."

"The
essential part rests, on the proclamation made January 4, 1718 by Mr. Francois
Bertrand, Royal Notary (AD Lozere III E 8564) for the benefit of Gillaume de
Latour, Seigneur d'Aquebelle, whom Francoise Argenson employed to defend her
interests against Ambroise Lafront; Andre Bondurant, Apothecary of Genolhac;
and, generally, against the 'holdings and occupation of the property abandoned
by J*** Bondurant, late son of Jean Pierre Bondurant, Sieur de Cougoussat,
fugitive from the Kingdon because of religion.' That document is not exact as to the date. Francoise Argenson was a neice of Jean Pierre Bondurant, Sieur de
Cougoussat; and we have to return to the conflict of opposing interests, before
1718, of Andre Bondurant, Apothecary, son of Antoin Bondurant and Suzanne
Raoux, and also first cousin of the Sieur de Cougoussat."

Genolhac is now in the Department of Gard at the border line between
Gard and Lozere.)

Notes for HARDIN PETER NATHAN BUNDRANT:
Hardin P.N. and
Janey Eveline (Cooksey) Bundrant established their homestead and ranch in
Coryell County between the towns of Purmela and Ireland about 1890. The remains of their original one room
dugout home and water well can still be found - in this year of our Lord 2000
a.d.- just a short distance from the cemetery on the only remaining parcel of
the ranch still owned by Bundrant's.
H.P.N. and Janey
set aside a small parcel of land to be used for a family cemetery but as time,
distance, and circumstance changed, so did the use of the cemetery. Many Bundrant family members and their
progeny are at rest there but so are other names. The cemetery is now known as "Evergreen-Bundrant
Cemetery" but is still accessible only through private property.
